Why You Should Take a Programming Class

Have you ever dreamed of making your own app? Or creating your own website? If so, then programming might be the career path for you! Programming jobs are currently one of the highest-paying and fastest-growing in the US, with numbers expected to increase by over 15% by 2020. And, in the increasingly digital age, computer programming knowledge has become an essential skill to have on your resume, regardless of what field you want to work in. So how do you get started?

Understanding computers is a great skill to have
In our increasingly digital world, understanding how computers work is becoming more and more important. Even if you don’t want to be a programmer, taking a programming class can help you better understand how the devices you use every day work.

But what do I mean by computer?
A computer is an electronic device that stores and processes data, according to a set of instructions called a program. A program is a list of instructions that tell the computer what to do. In order to create a program, you need to know how to code.

What do you need to get started?
If you want to learn how to code, there are a few things you need to get started. First, you’ll need a computer. A laptop is ideal, but a desktop will work too. Second, you’ll need a text editor. There are many different text editors available, but we recommend using Atom or Sublime Text. Third, you’ll need a compiler. A compiler is a program that converts your code into an executable file. Fourth, you’ll need a programming language.

How does learning this help me?
In today’s economy, computer programming skills are in high demand. By taking a class or two, you can gain the skills you need to start a new career or get a leg up in your current one. But classes aren’t just for people who want to work with computers; they’re also great for anyone who wants to work with data and analysis, graphic design, audio engineering, video editing and animation. If you’re not sure which one is right for you, take some time and look at the various programs that schools offer!

I learned how to code in [time period]. It was hard, but [benefit]
I learned how to code in college. It was hard, but it gave me a skillset that I could use in any number of industries. Plus, it’s a great way to make money. If you’re thinking about taking a programming class, I highly recommend it!

How do I pick my first language?
When you’re starting to learn programming, it can be difficult to decide which language to begin with. However, there are a few things you can keep in mind that will help you choose the right one for you. First, think about what you want to use the language for. If you’re interested in web development, languages like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript would be good choices. If you want to create apps for iOS or Android, Swift or Java would be better options.

How do I learn C# if I already know Java/Python/C++/PHP/Ruby?
The C# programming language is very versatile and can be used for a variety of tasks. If you know another programming language, learning C# will be a breeze. However, even if you don’t know any other languages, taking a C# class will still give you a solid foundation in programming concepts that you can build upon.
